The UUA: Christian Atheists

By: Locke @atheist1234

I saw this group marching during the LGBT Pride Parade in Indianapolis.  It intrigued me as it seemed like a church but there were no standard crosses and they were the only church that seemed to support gay marriage in the parade.  Don’t get me wrong, the parade had multiple churches marching in it but this one seemed different.  So I checked it out and found something very different, a church with no god…
I’ve spent some time on uua.org and there is no mention of Jesus.  Instead I found this statement.

“Many Unitarian Universalists trace their Unitarian roots back to 16th century Europeans Michael Servetus and Francis David. In separate instances, both men sought proof of the existence of the Holy Trinity in the Bible. When they found none, they adopted the view of a 'unity of God,' which led to founding Unitarianism.”

In fact uua.org specifically addresses atheist with this statement.

“Today, a significant proportion of Unitarian Universalists do not believe in any type of god. Our congregations are theologically diverse places where people with many different understandings of the sacred can be in religious community together.”

A bit lower on the same page is an article which was very interesting as it explained in detail the UUA position on atheist.  http://www.uuworld.org/2003/01/feature3.html

It is a different type of church and maybe it’s the middle ground many Christians will go to on their path to atheism.  I’m not advocating the UUA I’m simply saying that this is not your everyday church and the site uua.org and the article listed above are worth the read.
